As part of an NDT insurance inspection preparation at a paper mill in Leeds, our engineering team carried out a full strip-down and inspection process to ensure the boiler was ready for ultrasonic testing.

We began by carefully removing sections of steel cladding from the boiler to expose critical inspection areas. Due to the age and degradation of the existing lagging, it was determined to be unsuitable for re-use. The material was carefully bagged, labelled, and removed from the site in accordance with safe disposal protocols.

Once the boiler surfaces were exposed, accurate measurements of the refractory quarl were taken to ensure precise reconstruction. The refractory lining was broken out using 110V breakers, preparing the boiler for a detailed inspection.

The exposed plate surfaces were thoroughly cleaned to meet the standards required by the ultrasonic testing inspector. Following the inspection:

  • If the boiler passed, engineers proceeded with a full rebuild, including new thermal lagging and cladding installation.
  • If the boiler failed, our engineers were equipped to carry out repairs immediately on-site to bring the system back into compliance.

This project highlights our expertise in boiler inspection preparation, refractory work, and compliance-driven repairs, ensuring minimal downtime and long-term asset reliability.
