EXPERT WELDED & RIVETED FIREBOX FABRICATION FOR HERITAGE STEAM BOILERS

The firebox is a critical component of any steam vehicle’s boiler system. It’s the chamber where fuel is burned to generate heat, which in turn produces steam to power the engine. Typically made from robust steel or copper, the firebox must withstand extreme temperatures and pressure, making its design and fabrication a highly specialised skill.

Since 1968, our company has been at the forefront of firebox manufacture for vintage steam locomotives, traction engines, and other historic steam vehicles. We combine traditional boilermaking craftsmanship with modern engineering techniques to design and build fireboxes tailored to any specification. Whether restoring an original design or developing a bespoke solution, our skilled team ensures every firebox meets rigorous safety standards while preserving the integrity and authenticity of the vehicle.

RIVETED VS WELDED FIREBOXES

Historically, fireboxes were constructed using riveted plates, overlapping steel sheets fastened together with rivets, which was the industry standard during the steam era. Riveted fireboxes are prized for their authenticity and remain common in heritage restorations.

In contrast, welded fireboxes are a modern alternative, joining steel plates with continuous welds. This method can provide improved strength, reduced leakage, and easier maintenance, but may not always align with historic restoration standards.

Our expertise encompasses both methods, allowing us to advise and deliver fireboxes that balance authenticity, performance, and compliance with current safety regulations.

Our Firebox Manufacturing Process

01
first step

DESIGN & SPECIFICATION

We work closely with clients to understand the exact requirements, referencing original drawings or developing new specifications where necessary.

02
second step

MATERIAL SELECTION

High-grade steels or copper alloys are carefully chosen for strength, heat resistance, and historical accuracy.

03
third step

PLATE PREPARATION

Steel plates are cut, shaped, and prepared using traditional forming methods and modern CNC technology.

04
fourth step

ASSEMBLY & JOINING

Depending on the specification, plates are riveted or welded together with expert precision.

05
fifth step

INSPECTION & TESTING

Each firebox undergoes rigorous quality checks, including dimensional inspections, pressure testing, and non-destructive examination.

06
sixth step

FINISHING & DELIVERY

The completed firebox is finished to customer requirements and delivered ready for installation.
