shell boilers.
SPECIALISTS IN VINTAGE SHELL BOILER REPAIRS AND REBUILDS
Shell boilers, such as Lancashire and Cornish Mill boilers, were central to the Industrial Revolution, powering early industry and transport. Though many have been lost, preserved examples remain in operation across the UK, requiring specialist care to maintain their integrity and historical value.
With over 50 years of experience, we are trusted experts in the restoration and repair of vintage flued and fire-tube boilers. Our team combines traditional boilermaking skills with modern inspection and fabrication methods to deliver precise, authentic, and fully compliant restorations.

WHAT IS A TRADITIONAL SHELL BOILER?
Shell boilers, also known as flued or fire-tube boilers, are among the earliest industrial steam boilers. Named for their cylindrical shell containing one or more large flues, they operate by passing heat through tubes to warm the surrounding water and generate steam. Commonly used in the steam plant operations of industries such as textiles, these boilers were also found in early locomotives, steam-powered ships, and vehicles.
TRADITIONAL WATER-TUBE BOILERS
Vintage water-tube boilers function differently from shell boilers by circulating water through a network of tubes inside the boiler, which are heated externally by hot gases from a furnace. As the water travels through these tubes, it absorbs heat rapidly and converts into steam. This design allows for higher pressure and temperature compared to shell boilers, making water-tube boilers ideal for applications requiring superheated steam, such as driving turbine engines.
