We were commissioned to undertake a complete rebuild of a 1904 American-built Frick traction engine boiler, following an enquiry for the manufacture and installation of a new inner firebox. The project required a combination of traditional engineering skills, modern inspection techniques, and specialist fabrication to restore the boiler to full operational and certificated status.
Upon receipt of the boiler at our works, we conducted comprehensive sandblasting of both the internal and external surfaces to remove scale, corrosion, and residues. A third-party NDT specialist carried out a detailed survey, revealing serious flaws in the boiler barrel. Based on these findings, a full rebuild quotation was prepared and approved.
The restoration involved the manufacture and installation of critical boiler components:
- Flanged and butt-welded inner firebox fabricated to original specifications.
- New smokebox tubeplate manufactured for precise fit and durability.
- New riveted boiler barrel with butt-straps, replicating historical construction methods.
Our engineers then proceeded to:
- Fit all new components and secure them in position.
- Hot-rivet all firebox, barrel, and tubeplate components to restore structural integrity.
- Caulk all rivets and lap seams to ensure leak-tight performance.
- Re-tube the boiler, installing new tubes for optimal heat transfer.
- Conduct hydraulic testing to verify the boiler’s pressure-holding capability.
- Perform steam testing to confirm operational performance and compliance with certification standards.
The project successfully transformed the boiler from a deteriorated shell into a fully restored, fully certified traction engine boiler. The work combined precision engineering, traditional boiler-making skills, and modern testing techniques, resulting in a historically accurate, safe, and operationally reliable steam boiler. The transformation was both technically rewarding and visually impressive.
